Chunky Cinnamon Applesauce
I got tired of going to the store and finding chunky applesauce, or cinnamon applesauce, but never chunky cinnamon. So I found a good chunky applesauce and added in the spices.
Ingredients:
- Ten apples of mixed types (some sweet, some tart, some mild). I recommend Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Envy.
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ¼ cup and 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
- Ground cinnamon and nutmeg to taste
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 400F.
- Peel, core, and cut apples into small chunks.
- Place apples in 9x13 baking dish.
- Cut the butter into small slices.
- Scatter brown sugar and butter slices evenly over the top.
- COVER THE TOP WITH FOIL.
Seriously, I forget this step way too often and the apples dry out if you don’t do this. - Bake for 30 minutes. Take the apples out, mix them (either in the pan or in a separate mixing bowl) and return to the oven for another 30 minutes.
- Mash the apples or run them through the food processor a small batch at a time.
* If using the food processor, sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg in each round as it processes. - Mix the final product all together in a large bowl and check if the cinnamon/nutmeg is to your taste. If not, add more.
- Chill and enjoy! Or find a pie recipe (it has been mentioned several times to me that this tastes like a pie filling) and incorporate.
Tip: If you want smoother applesauce, then ignore step 6. You will get less volume, but the sauce will come out smoother.
