"But Dusty, if you've abandoned caffeine, what do you use as a replacement? And what could possibly replace the taste of coffee?" the masses cry out. Well...

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ tbsp instant chicory powder
  • 1 ½ tbsp dark cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ tbsp white granulated sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp whole milk
  • 1 tsp heavy whipping cream

Directions:

  1. Boil hot water.
  2. Add all dry ingredients in a large mug and stir. Spices should be sprinkled in to taste. Sugar can be adjusted to taste.
  3. Add the dairy items and stir vigorously to produce a sort of thick pudding at the bottom of the mug. Stir until there are no dry clumps left.
  4. Add 1 to 1 ½ cups of hot water, depending on how much room is in your mug. Stir thoroughly.
  5. Sip to taste it. If it’s too bitter for you, add sugar a pinch at a time. Too sweet? Add more cocoa and chicory, a teaspoon at a time.
  6. Enjoy!

Notes:

  • Because it doesn't have the same level of caffeine as coffee, I can have this any time, day or night, but people sensitive to the levels of caffeine in dark chocolate should be careful what time they have this.
  • When I say instant chicory powder, I mean this. I do not mean chicory coffee or anything with a coarser grind than this powder right here. But do not ever get the powder that you're storing wet. Don't use wet spoons on it, don't flick water near it. It will turn the stuff you're not using into an inedible brick if moisture gets in the bag/container.
  • "Large Mug" in this case is a mug that holds at least a cup and a half of liquid.
